When a new and original artist emerges on the scene and provides inspiration for all around him, there is often a desperate need to identify the source of such genius. In the case of Bob Dylan, as the young man in the peaked cap sang his own folk style songs, the world was transfixed. During the early Sixties Dylan created a tremendous impact with such albums as 'Bob Dylan', 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' and 'The Times They Are A-Changin'. Dylan influenced everyone, from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix. But even as he was a-changin' the times, musicologists were eager to discover the roots of Dylan. The purpose of this compilation is to celebrate the many other great artists who - it could be argued - laid the foundations for his work. Certainly the richly varied performers on this 2CD set represent the best in American music. There are ballad singers, blues men, R&B, folk and country artists, jazz men and women. Among the 45 diverse tracks, we find artists ranging from Muddy Waters to Hank Williams, and from Leadbelly to Chuck Berry and Louis Armstrong. Billie Holiday singing 'Strange Fruit' can only have given the young Dylan insight into the passion that can be unleashed by a powerful song with a message. There are no songs by Bob Dylan himself on this compilation, but there are some of the most inspirational performances of the 20th century. These are songs that influenced the man himself. This double CD is an essential addition for all Dylan collectors.
